University, located
in beautiful Northern California and
only 30 miles south of San Francisco, is
one of the most selective and diverse
institutions in the world. Home to
approximately 6,500 undergraduates, more
than half of whom are students of color,
Stanford is a medium-size, residential,
liberal arts college within a major
research university.
The freedom to pursue what you love at
Stanford…As
a respected leader in the humanities,
sciences and engineering, Stanford
brings together extraordinary faculty
members and students in the pursuit of
excellence. Students and faculty
cultivate an environment of intense
creativity and collaboration where they
encourage each other to think across
disciplines and outside the box. As a
Stanford undergraduate, you will not be
pushed to the periphery of the research
endeavors that define Stanford; rather,
our breadth of world-class education
invites you to explore and participate
actively in a diversity of ideas. Our
7:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures
that you will be part of the research
activity that crosses all disciplines
and curricular levels, you will have a
voice in the classroom, and you will
contribute to the body of new knowledge
created at Stanford. Our mission is to
challenge traditional boundaries through
a risk-taking spirit of inquiry,
innovation and investigation.
Opportunities for discovery begin in the
classroom and extend into the rich
research life of campus laboratories,
libraries, studios and beyond.
Living and learning at Stanford…Learning
outside the classroom is supported by a
vibrant and intimate residential system
that emphasizes service and community.
Approximately 95% of students live in
campus housing and participate in over
600 student organizations. These
organizations encompass a broad range of
interests, which include but are not
limited to academic, cultural, social,
religious, and political. Stanford also
takes great pride in supporting a
nationally recognized NCAA Division I
athletic program. In addition to the
communal activities, students compliment
their learning through participating in
a vast array of educational
opportunities including: Freshman and
Sophomore Seminars taught by world
renowned faculty in groups of 16 or
fewer students; Undergraduate Research
Programs where more than $4.4 million is
granted to undergraduates each year;
nine Overseas Study Centers. Over 70
fields of study are offered at
Stanford, giving you the true freedom to
explore your |

current interests and the flexibility to uncover
new passions. The Stanford curriculum and
community are designed to allow you to discover
how the ideas that excite you can change not
only the community around you, but also the
world.
Diversity at Stanford…Stanford’s
undergraduates come from all 50 states and more
than 60 nations; but diversity at Stanford means
more than geographic, racial or ethnic
differences. The Stanford community embraces a
broad range of socioeconomic, religious,
cultural, and educational backgrounds. We
believe that the best education can develop only
in a vibrant, diverse community that actively
affirms both the differences among its members
and the numerous points of connection. Stanford
understands that holistic student development
happens with support and access both inside and
outside the realm of academics. The diversity on
Stanford’s campus can be felt through our
classes, student organizations, residential
life, and eight individual community centers.
These different venues not only serve as a
general resource for the campus community, but
more importantly, the critical purpose of
empowering students to thrive and reach their
full potential. The community centers include:
Asian
American Activities Center, Bechtel
International Center, Black Community Services
Center, Student Disability Resource Center, El
Centro Chicano, Native American (American
Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian
Program) Cultural Center, the Women’s Center,
and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered (LGBT)
Community Resource Center.
