ewanee:
The University of
the South is a
top ranked national liberal arts school with a
commitment to education, diversity, and service.
Sewanee allows students to choose from
approximately 40 majors and 28 minors as well as
several pre-professional programs including a
3-2 program in engineering, a 3-2 program in
natural resources, and a 4-2 program in
nursing. Students can also initiate their own
majors by working with faculty and the Dean of
the College.
The Sewanee Community: With
over 90 percent of the faculty and students
living on campus, learning is something that
occurs both in and outside of the classroom. Our
small classes and close-knit community ensure
that students receive the personal attention
they want and deserve to be successful. Sewanee
is not only a place to learn, but also a place
to call home. The current Vice-President of the
African-American Alliance says, “Sewanee teaches
you to live outside of the box. Don’t limit
yourself to one culture, one relationship, or
even one career; because after a day in Sewanee,
I guarantee you won’t just learn one thing.”
The Sewanee Faculty:
Professors are at the top of their fields, both
as educators and researchers. Sewanee’s faculty
includes Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellows,
Rhodes Scholars, novelists and poets, former
foreign service officers, the author of a
nuclear weapons treaty, United Nations
consultants, an African peace negotiator,
ordained ministers, think tank participants,
National Science Foundation award winners, and
recorded musicians. They are all here to help
you succeed.
The Sewanee Relationship:
Sewanee is a community characterized by honor,
trust, warmth, support and courtesy. Our
supportive community and faculty help students
reach their goals. Among Sewanee’s student
successes is Charles. Charles is a pre-med
student majoring in Biology and Economics. “Why
I would recommend Sewanee? The opportunity to
meet and interact with wonderful people from
diverse cultures and to work closely with
proficient professors — experts in their fields
of study — and be able to build personal
relationships with them.
The Sewanee Tradition: For
more than a century, the University has occupied
a key place on America’s literary crossroads.
Founded in 1892, the Sewanee Review
is America’s oldest continuously published literary journal. Each summer, the
University also plays host to the Sewanee
Writers’ Conference, which |

brings many of
the most renowned contemporary writers to
campus. In addition, Sewanee owns the rights to
the works of playwright Tennessee Williams,
which provide resources for fellowships that
bring well known and respected artists to campus
each year to work with students.
The Sewanee Lifestyle: With a
diverse student body and close proximity to
cities such as Nashville and Atlanta, Sewanee
offers over 130 student organizations as well as
extracurricular and leadership activities for
every interest. Sewanee has a student
programming board that receives approximately
$60,000 to bring entertainers and fun activities
to the campus. Sewanee also has 22 varsity
sports. In addition, there are a number of club
sports and intramural sports for students to get
involved. More than 80% of students participate
in some type of community service project during
their time at Sewanee.
The Sewanee Future: The
Insider’s Guide to the Colleges states,
“At Sewanee, you’ll find a formal respect for,
reverence for, and involvement in, serious
academics. The school turns out large numbers of
Rhodes Scholars, and a high percentage also go
on to law, medical, veterinary, education and
technical graduate programs.” Our alumni include
24 Rhodes Scholars, 24 NCAA Post-graduate
Scholars, and 34 Watson Fellows to name a few.
Graduates are accepted to medical and law
schools at rates far above the national average
(85% into medical schools and 95% into law
schools).
The Sewanee
Opportunity:
We have an extensive financial aid program
available as well as scholarship programs,
including Regents’ Scholarships that are
available for students of color. Approximately
60% of all students receive need-based and/or
merit-based financial assistance. It’s no
wonder that Sewanee has been considered one of
the best values/buys in higher education by
Money magazine and U.S. News &
World Report. |
