ou’ll
feel a sense of momentum and vitality as
you
arrive at Denison
University’s picturesque 1000-acre campus in
Granville, Ohio. An independent,
residential college of liberal arts and
sciences for men and women, Denison was
founded in 1831. It is steeped in
tradition and focused on the success of
its approximately 2100 students who can
select from more than 40 majors and 12
pre-professional programs. Denison has
an alumni body of more than 30,000 and
an endowment of $640 million that places
it among the top colleges and
universities in the United States.
The University is situated atop a ridge overlooking Granville, a
quaint, New England-like village with
shopping, restaurants and services
conveniently located adjacent to campus.
Columbus, Ohio’s capital and a
metropolitan area with a population of
1.5 million, is just 35 minutes from
campus. Students go to Columbus for
broader access to cultural activities,
worship and shopping.
The University completed a $60-million construction
project in 2003, its most ambitious in
more than a quarter-century, that
included a two-acre grassy Campus Common
framed by the state-of-the-art Samson
Talbot Hall of Biological Science and
the Burton D. Morgan Center for student,
faculty and alumni-related activities.
In 2006, work was completed on two new
apartment-style student residence halls
to enhance the variety of residential
options on campus.
Denison
faculty and students work to create a
community that values each member for
his or her uniqueness while building on
common strengths. The student body is
geographically and ethnically diverse,
representing 48 states and 27 other
countries, with 17 percent of the
student body being multicultural. In
2006, multicultural students also
represented 17 percent of first-year
students; of these, four percent were
international students. In the decade
from 1990 to 2000, Denison increased the
number of full-time multicultural
students by more than 100 percent.
The 199 members of the faculty are both teachers and
scholars and thrive on the stimulation
provided by their students through joint
research, lively discussions in small
classes and interaction both in and
outside the classroom. Students
frequently do one-on-one research with
their professors in all disciplines,
co-authoring papers they may present at
national professional society meetings.
During summer 2006, 125 students
remained on campus as summer scholars,
doing independent or collaborative
research with faculty.
Outside the classroom,
Denison students are involved |

in community service, campus
entertainment, student
government, University communications,
multicultural organizations, spiritual groups,
honor societies and social clubs through the 150
student-run organizations.
Denison’s Honors Program offers up to 40 seminar
courses each year, many of which are
interdisciplinary and team-taught by faculty
from different divisions of the college. The
model program has matriculated nearly 3,000
students in the last 20 years. Each year,
approximately 10 percent of
Denison
students may opt for off-campus study, choosing
from 85 selective programs in the U.S. and
abroad.
Denison is a
founding member of the North Coast Athletic
Conference and offers a broad-based program of
23 varsity sports for men and women. The
University has won 91 conference championships
since 1984, and nine consecutive All-Sports
Championships. Denison ranked 16th in the
Division III colleges nationwide in the
Directors’ Cup this year, based on points earned
for post-season NCAA competition. Denison
athletes are regularly honored as All-Americans
and Academic All-Americans.
The Career
Services Center provides
guidance for a wide range of careers and
advanced study. Last year, about 60 employers
and 85 graduate/professional school
representatives came to campus to network with
Denison students.
Denison is
committed to enrolling the best-qualified
students, regardless of their financial means.
Last year, Denison administered more than $49
million in student financial aid; of that amount
more than 66 percent was awarded from
institutional funds. The University also awards
more than 1,000 merit-based scholarships to
first-year students each year.
