Coe College

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

A Tradition of Excellence

rom the natural sciences to the fine arts, since 1851 Coe   College has provided students with a foundation of learning that goes far beyond simply preparing for a career.  At Coe you will develop rational, independent, and critical thinking skills. Your personal and cultural identity will be cultivated, you’ll discover your passions and the bedrock of your character and, perhaps most importantly, you will learn how to learn.

Coe College is a selective, private, nationally-recognized four-year coeducational liberal arts institution that provides a superior education for students in a residential setting. Along with quality instruction from superb faculty, Coe offers an abundance of out-of-class opportunities to provide you with a well-rounded experience and prepare you for your future. Within six months of graduation, 98% of Coe graduates are working or in graduate school.

Unlike many smaller liberal arts colleges, Coe is fortunate to be located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a community of over 175,000 people, which provides an abundance of internship, cultural and recreational opportunities for students. Additionally, we are only a few hours drive from major Midwestern metropolitan areas like Chicago, Minneapolis - St. Paul, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Kansas City and Omaha.

Excellence in Academic Quality: Coe is one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the U.S., and is featured in college guidebooks such as Peterson’s Guide to Selective Colleges, The Princeton Review’s 357 Best Private Colleges, and Colleges of Distinction. Barron’s 300 Best Buys in College Education ranks Coe as Very Competitive and U.S. News and World Report regularly includes Coe as one of the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the country.

The key to Coe’s tradition of excellence in academic quality relates directly to small class sizes and the interest shown by professors to make learning a personalized experience. At Coe, 95% of professors have the highest degrees in their fields, the average class size is 16, and the student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

To complement our personal attention, Coe’s Writing Center is recognized as one of the best in the nation, providing students with guidance to improve communication skills. The research opportunities offered at Coe rival those typically offered to graduate students, enhancing academic enrichment.

Experience pays off with The Coe Plan: One

reason Coe graduates succeed is because of the unique opportunities provided by the Coe Plan. The Coe Plan introduces students to a variety of experiences through internships, off-campus study, and individual research with Coe’s faculty, as well as special guest lecturers, and personal career planning and advice.

Through the Coe Plan, students have the opportunity to learn from industry and academic professionals. Examples of recent Coe Plan internship locations include Walt Disney World, the State Department and the Seattle Zoo. Research opportunities have taken students to laboratories in the United Kingdom, Germany, China, and many other places.  In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in Washington Term, New York Term, and study abroad at dozens of foreign universities to fulfill Coe Plan requirements.

Involved Students - Campus Life at Coe: As a residential college, Coe recognizes that creating the right living environment is essential to provide a superior liberal arts education. More than 90% of Coe students participate in extracurricular activities. Fine arts programs provide a cornerstone of activity at Coe, with a wide variety of music, art, and theatre opportunities. Whether it be a musical group or a theatrical production, majors and non-majors alike are encouraged to participate. Coe students actively support more than 60 student clubs and organizations ranging from Artists Anonymous to intramurals to the Physics Club.

As a member of one of the most active and competitive conferences in NCAA Division III, Coe provides excellent opportunities for student-athletes. Coe is committed to providing student-athletes with outstanding educational and athletic experiences where sportsmanship and integrity are emphasized as much as winning.
